The (ex)Expatriate's Kitchen: Book Giveaway! The Cleaner Plate Club -- UPDATED

The (ex)Expatriate's Kitchen: Book Giveaway! The Cleaner Plate Club
I am so excited about this book, this author is a friend of a friend of mine and she has blogged extensively about eating well for families. We all know how hard it is to get healthy yet appetizing food on our tables and actually get the kids to eat. Beth brings you tips, hints, techniques and recipes to take the stress out of dinner time. I simply adore her writing style and her down to earth approach.\

If you leave me a comment here that tells me why you love cooking for your kids, why you love Beth Bader, why you think it is important to make healthy meals for your family YOU COULD WIN A COPY OF THE BOOK! The actual winner will be chosen by my 8 year old on or about February 1st. I will contact the winner to get a mailing address to send the book. THIS IS TOTALLY EXCITING AND YOU SHOULD COMPLETELY DO THIS RIGHT NOW! (extreme drama caps!!) Now get on it and write me a comment below!

  1. And how do I get this book? Tell you how fabulous Beth is? I make her Meatloaf Florentine at least once a month...and it makes enough to freeze one loaf, so we eat it twice. And sometimes there are leftovers from a loaf...and they make a great base for spaghetti sauce. :)

  2. I think telling me how fabulous she is or why you want or need the book might be an excellent way to win it. I was actually trying to direct people to her site to win her book give-away, but since that might be over now, I am OFFICIALLY HAVING A GIVE-AWAY, RIGHT NOW!! The lucky winner will be chosen by my 8 year old and I will give the book away next month. So just a week and a few days to enter!

  3. Do you know? I'm just realizing from various comments around the place that my kids eat really really well. They love the meatloaf florentine...even when I pack so many veggies into it that it's decidedly green. They try new things. They listen to my rule of "you're only allowed to refuse to eat four things", and rotate items on and off the list constantly. My four year old loves raw mushrooms. What do I have to complain about? So, as much as I LOOOVE Beth, and love her recipes, I suspect that someone else needs this particular book much more than me.

Besides, shipping to Australia is expensive. :)

  4. My kids eat really well too, but I am a cookbook addict and I love Beth's writing style, so I am getting it any way. :) I plan on posting a link to the contest on MT today, so let's see how many contestants we get.

  5. Oh, I'll definitely get a copy. I just don't want to steal a free one from a more deserving story!! :)

  6. Dammit! Carina's story is so good. :)

I don't think I can top it. But I will say that I have always enjoyed Beth's diaries and comments at MotherTalkers. I remember her excellent advice on hiding veggies. Beans were a vegetable for us growing up so the concept was foreign to me.

I think cooking healthy meals for your kids is so important. Not only do they appreciate where food comes from and get to see foods in their natural state -- not just frozen or packaged -- but I think the rituals around food are so important like eating together at a dinner table and taking your time and savoring what you eat.

Congratulations to Beth on her new book! Either way, I will definitely get a copy, but thought I would try here first. -Elisa:)

  8. OK - I am definitely at a disadvantage. I don't know Beth at all :( I have an 11yo boy who has told me that by the time he's 30, he'll eat vegetables, but not yet. (he knows how to yank my chain!!)

But not only that, I'd love to find a way for him to eat lower fat, lower carb foods. He'll eat applesauce, for example, but when it's sitting next to pizza, he will barely glance at it.

  9. I already have my copy of Beth's cookbook - I'm such a girlfan! ;-P

I also don't have much to complain about - my girls are healthy eaters and we have a "three bites" rule at dinner (i.e., you must have at least three bites before you make up your mind). Also, thanks to a science-fact from Carina about taste buds shedding every two weeks, Jess regularly re-tries things she doesn't enjoy, just to see if those particular taste buds have sloughed off. (Hasn't happened yet, but she still tries, which is all I ask.)

I cook healthy meals because that's what I was taught to do and because I enjoy it. I love cooking, I love being independent, I love experimenting with new flavors and new recipes, and I love that both Jess and Lily are up for the ride. Last week, Jess and I made banana bread, and Jess taught Lily how to mash banana and how to stir the batter. I'm one proud mama!

  10. I made the Meatloaf Florentine tonight at EVERYONE'S suggestion -- the kids loved it, I loved it, it smelled *heavenly* when I took it out of the oven. Ky has just walked in so he has not had the pleasure of enjoying it yet, but I'm sure he will.

I tend to get into ruts, and before I know it "pasta with (store bought) pesto" is on the menu once a week. Same with chicken tacos made with (storebought) rotisserie chicken. I have a ton of cookbooks but I hate recipes that require me to buy stuff I won't use again for a long time. Case in point, I bought dry white wine today for an Ina Garten recipe -- I'm a red wine gal myself. I will drink it, of course, when I finish the lemon chicken, but I'd rather make stuff that doesn't require a whole bunch of things I never have, ya know?

My kids are pretty good eaters too -- of course, they *are* 14. I was really impressed with how they ate this summer on vacation -- they even tried steak tartare!

  11. About the wine, if you freeze it in ice cube trays and then remove the frozen cubes and put them in a freezer ziploc bag you will always have some wine handy to deglaze a pan or add to a sauce or what have you. That's what I do with white wine anyhow, since I am a red gal myself! :)

  12. I want this cookbook! I have to cook for wild monkeys! You KNOW I need all the help I can get as wild monkeys are notorious for eating only raw foods and pizza and screeching.

  13. And, seriously, Carina is totally bragging.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sorry...didn't mean to brag. My kids aren't perfect eaters, by a long shot. But I from what I've seen, other people have it WAY worse. So I'm just counting my few blessings when it comes to my maniac children. Have you seen "Megamind"? That's my son. I'm not kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hahaha, Kayla is kidding Carina! That is just her way. I have NOT seen Megamind BTW, though I love Tina Fey, it just never came to the ONE SCREEN movie theatre here on the island.

  16. Ok, I'm entering but if I win I will buy the book for a friend to support Beth! She is TEH AWESOME. She's gorgeous and I envy her athleticism and her ability to create beautiful dishes even out of common foods.

  17. Suzanne, I will SEND you a book AND a book for this giveaway. As soon as I get done blushing. Just send me your snail mail address, okay?

    I love you guys, too!

  18. Oh Sarah, you are making me really blush! Heh. farmerfare [at] gmail [dot] com is a good place to send your snail mail, Suzanne. Thanks!

  19. I heart you for your wine in ice blocks suggestion. DH and I can never finish a bottle and I am *always* pouring, like, a quarter down the drain because I'm between sauce batches. You complete me, twinsie! ;-)

  20. OH wow! Thanks Beth! I just sent you an e-mail with the winner's name and address, but I will gladly buy my own copy of your book. That is so incredibly gracious of you, thank you so much!

I can't believe I missed these comments, so sorry! We've been going through the "everyone's going to get sick" cycle since Valentine's Day, so I was a little distracted.

Also, Rachel, I swear if we were separated at birth. It's the Melbourne/Melbourne thing, you are living my antipodean-doppleganger existence, or I am living YOURS.
